How To Create a New Virtual Machine in VirtualBox

As discussed in the previous post, VirtualBox is an open source virtualization platform provided by the Oracle. This is the next (second) article of the post series “Getting started With VirtualBox” that we have been explaining to our visitors and readers. Here, we will demonstrate how to create a new virtual machine in VirtualBox. In this guide, we will use Windows 10 as a guest operating system. You can use any other guest OS to create a new virtual machine.

The complete Getting Started With VirtualBox guide contains the following topics:

  1. Downloading the latest version of VirtualBox.
  2. Creating a new virtual machine in VirtualBox.
  3. Understanding and configuring virtual machine settings in VirtualBox.
  4. Installing a guest operating system in VirtualBox.
  5. Working with snapshots in VirtualBox.
  6. Installing VirtualBox Extension Pack.
  7. Encrypting a virtual machine in VirtualBox.
  8. Creating a clone virtual machine in VirtualBox.

Creating New Virtual Machine

To create a new virtual machine in VirtualBox, you need to perform the following steps:

  1. We assume that you have already downloaded and installed VirtualBox on your system. On the VirtualBox Manager console, click New to create a new VM.Create a New virtual machine in virtualbox
  2. On the Name and operating system page, specify the name of the virtual machine. Select the vendor type and then select the desired version of the guest operating system. Since we are going to install Windows 10, select Microsoft as a vendor in the Type drop-down list and select Windows 10 in the Version drop-down list. You can select the Vendor and Version as per your requirements.Specify Name and Guest Operating System in VirtualBox
  3. On the Memory size page, VirtualBox assigns automatically appropriate memory size to the guest operating system. However, it is recommended to customize the memory size as per the requirements of your virtual machine.Specify Memory size in VirtualBox
  4. On the Hard disk page, review all the available three options and try to understand their uses. If you already have a pre-configured VHD file, select the Use an existing virtual hard disk file radio button and select the VHD that you want to use. If you want to create a new virtual hard disk, select the Create a virtual hard disk now radio button.Create a new virtual hard disk in VirtualBox
  5. On the Hard disk file type page, you can select any of the VHD disk types depending on your choice. The default disk type is VDI. If you choose VMDK disk type, it will also be compatible with the VMware. Windows Virtual PC and Hyper-V use VHD and VHDX disk type formats.Supported virtual hard disk types in VirtualBox
  6. On the Storage on physical hard disk page, select either Dynamically allocated or Fixed size radio button. If you select Dynamically option, VirtualBox will use the disk space of your hard disk only when as the virtual machine’s data will increase. Initially, it will be very less in size. However, the size of your host’s hard disk will grow as the size of dynamic virtual disk increases. This option is more suitable for the disk optimization. dynamic expanding disk type in VirtualBox
  7. If you choose the Fixed size option, VirtualBox will deduct the exact disk size from your host disk. Does not matter how much space is free on the virtual machine’s virtual hard disk. This option provides greater performance than the dynamically allocated option.
  8. On the File location and size page, type the disk file name and select the location where you want to save it. You can also set the size of the virtual hard disk.Specifying file location and size in virtualbox
  9. Now, you have created a new virtual machine in VirtualBox. Just creating a virtual machine in VirtualBox is not enough to say that you are the master in VirtualBox. You still have to learn a lot. In the next post, we are going to explain and configure each of the virtual machine settings options in VirtualBox.
